At Occupational Health Portsmouth we know how important it is to manage your mental health to get you back on track and able to live your life to the full. We offer a range of services to help you boost your mental health and can point you in the direction of additional mental health services and charities.
As well as supporting staff, individuals and managers through Management Referrals, we also offer interventions, such as Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP®). Other services include Stress Management training, Wellbeing Days and Mental Health Awareness Training.
If you’re suffering from low mood or anxiety issues, please call an experienced mental health professional, or support services with mental health teams to assist you with your emotional wellbeing. Many mental health crisis teams are available 24 hours a day and have wellbeing advisors on hand who specialise in the understanding and treatment of common mental health problems.

WRAP® Wellness Recovery Action Plan
WRAP® or the Wellness Recovery Action Plan® is a self-help tool that promotes wellness and comes from an evidence-based approach. Mary Ellen Copeland created WRAP® in 1997 and since then it has been used to help people get and stay well. WRAP® works for mental, physical and general life issues so it is a good all-around tool to improve your life.
Using WRAP® will teach you to understand yourself better. You will recognise warning sounds when things aren’t so good and discover safe wellness tools that you can use to turn it all around.

Stress Management Training:
This is designed to look at what stress is and how it may manifest emotionally, behaviorally, physically and mentally. It reminds staff of the importance of looking after themselves, know their limits and retain their resilience. It assists staff to consider what keeps them well and who their supporters are in this.
There are plenty of coping strategies for dealing with stress in the workplace, and how best to go about handling stressful situations. Practising stress management techniques and reducing signs of stress within the working environment could be instrumental when it comes to lowering stress levels. Reducing stress and improving your mental health can be difficult, however through stress management courses, you can reduce your symptoms of stress and work-related stress.
Stress management is delivered by Occupational Health and is bookable via contacting the department on 02392 283352. It can be booked for teams of up to 15 people. Handouts are provided on stress management and workplace well-being.
Management Referrals for Mental Health Nurse Practitioner:
Examples of referrals to Mental Health Nurse Practitioner for treatment include:
- Complex mental health cases
- Mental health cases with a long term history of re-occurring mental health problems
- Mental illness cases with a history of psychotic episodes
- Cases involving addictions, substance abuse for example alcohol and drug misuse
- Mental health cases with a history of being an inpatient in Psychiatric Units
- Medical cases relating to complex eating disorders for example anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and other related eating disorders
- Work-related stress and anxiety conditions
Registered Mental Health Nurses in Portsmouth
Within the Occupational Health team, we have 2 Registered Mental Health Nurses (RMNs).
Kelly Merriman: 17 years’ experience working in a variety of Mental Health care settings, including Adult Medium and Low Secure Units, Acute Admissions, Psychiatric Intensive Care and Child & Adolescent Secure Services.
Nicky Rickett: Dual Qualified – RGN / RMN has spent many years working in the Head & Neck Unit in QA Hospital which has developed her understanding of the significant impact physical health can have on Mental Health and vice versa.
Workplace Wellbeing/ Mental Health Awareness Training
Our Mental Health Awareness Training in Portsmouth raises awareness of ill-mental health (particularly stress, depression and anxiety). It provides tools and guidance for daily wellbeing management and aims to remove the stigma surrounding mental health.
Mental Health is a serious subject. It also encourages employees and managers to discuss Mental Health in the workplace, which makes recovery and treatment easier to approach.

Mind is a mental health charity in England and Wales. Founded in 1946 as the National Association for Mental Health, it celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2016. This provides information and resources for managers supporting staff with mental health issues.
Off The Record
Off The Record is a registered charity and has been supporting young people from Havant, Portsmouth and the surrounding areas since 1977. It is an independent organisation, not to be confused with other agencies across the country that may have a similar name.
The volunteers offer support to young people. They work within an ethical framework for volunteers, using counselling skills as well as Youth Access guidelines of good practice and Hampshire Safeguarding Board policies and procedures.
Off The Record welcomes any young person in difficulty, whatever their circumstances and each year receive many contacts from young people. They will also offer some support for parents/guardians, as well as appropriate resources.
Hampshire Youth Access
Hampshire Youth Access (HYA) is a partnership of 12 leading agencies providing counselling, information, advice, and support to children and young people aged 5 to 17 across Hampshire.
They also give advice and information to anyone concerned about a child or young person’s emotional wellbeing.
By working together and getting in contact with others, they are able to share experiences and best practices. This means that they are in a good position to help improve outcomes for children and young people.
Solent Mind, and the Solent NHS Trust, are registered charities providing a wide range of high-quality services to support people with mental health problems across the Southern Region. Other NHS programmes offer a variety of alternate reach-out and contact options, such as talking therapies and psychological therapies.
