What is WRAP®?
The Wellness Recovery Action Plan® or a WRAP® Plan is an evidence-based self-help tool designed to promote wellness. It is a process that anyone can use to get well, stay well and make their life the way they want it to be.
It was developed in 1997 by a group of people who were searching for ways to overcome their own mental health issues and move on to fulfilling their dreams and goals. It is now used extensively by people in all kinds of circumstances, and by health care and mental health systems all over the world to address all kinds of physical, mental health and life issues.
WRAP® was created by Mary Ellen Copeland, an author, educator, and mental health recovery advocate in the USA.
WRAP® has been studied extensively in rigorous projects and is listed in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices.

How WRAP® Plans in Portsmouth work in Occupational Health
Within Occupational Health we discuss with an individual whether a WRAP® would be useful in the management of their health condition, whether it is mental or physical or if it would be useful to promote and help them to maintain their overall wellbeing. We also offer WRAP® as a group session.
We provide an initial template/booklet but reinforce the importance of WRAP® being a live document and that they can go off and be as creative with it as they like – giving the examples of photographs and drawings.
WRAP® for teams to remain well
For external clients, we provide sessions for up to 10 staff members per group. We are also available to offer Team WRAP® sessions, where teams can experience looking at how teams can remain “well” and cohesive.
Frequently asked questions
How will WRAP® help me to stay well?
WRAP® is all about you, written by you, for you. There are many testimonies on the WRAP® website above from people saying how their WRAP® has enabled them to stay well. There will be times however due to the nature of a person’s illness or the trigger when they may still become unwell. The hope is that with a robust plan for this the recovery time will be quicker.
Do I need to use WRAP® Daily?
The frequency of how often you use your WRAP® may fluctuate depending on where you are in your wellbeing. If your daily maintenance plan is fairly prescriptive it might be beneficial to put this somewhere (for example on your fridge) so you have a constant reminder of this.
Do I have to share my plan with others?
Your plan is yours and might have some very personal information in it. It is up to you if you share it with others. It might be beneficial to share elements with your supporters so they know how to recognise if you are starting to become unwell. (Quite often those closest to you will already know some of your early warning signs and recognise these before you do).
It’s important they have your permission to reflect on your wellbeing with you and for them to know how to support you to either promote or maintain your wellbeing. You may need a supporter to advocate for you in the event that you do become unwell so it’s important that they know what your wants and needs are until you can self-advocate again.
What if I don’t have any supporters?
Supporters come in many different guises. Your GP or practice nurse can be a supporter. A neighbour who might be aware of your comings and goings might be a supporter in terms of having permission to check on you if they notice that your activity has changed.
Animals are often supporters in terms of the love and affection they give and that they can be motivation to do something if only attend to their needs. Supporters are key to combatting a mental health crisis, so there are a lot of things to consider.
